NOW SHOWING AT A BLOG NEAR YOU... AWESOMENESS!

Rarely do I pimp new movies around here, preferring to stick to the, um... classics. But, dear friends, how can I resist sharing with you this trailer which is starting to pop up on various sci-fi blogs. Yes, it's...

MEGA SHARK VS. GIANT OCTOPUS!

I know, I know. I'm well aware that The Asylum is the company which has given us such direct to DVD stink bombs as Transmorphers, Exorcism: The Possession of Gail Bowers, and AVH: Alien Vs. Hunter. (And those are just the ones I've watched!) But this is different. This is...

MEGA SHARK VS. GIANT OCTOPUS!

The title alone almost brings tears to my eyes. And its got Lorenzo "Snake Eater" Lamas and Deborah Gibson in it. Yes, that Deborah Gibson. I met my wife when she was 16 years old and she had a Debbie Gibson poster on her wall and now, 20+ years after watching her shake her love (Debbie, not my wife), I actually get to see...

DEBORAH GIBSON VS. MEGA SHARK VS. GIANT OCTOPUS!

I know I shouldn't get my hopes up. I know that when the Catechism states "simple and faithful trust, humble and joyous assurance are the proper dispositions for one who prays the Our Father." it's not talking about stuff like this. I know that the "humble and trusting heart that enables us 'to turn and become like children'... is accomplished by the contemplation of God alone, and by the warmth of love, through which the soul, molded and directed to love him, speaks very familiarly to God as to its own Father with special devotion." I know that.

But Holy Cats! This has a giant shark jumping into the sky and grabbing an airplane! Worldly creation or not, it couldn't possibly let me down. Could it?

  1. I'm also aware of how huge the trailer is on some browsers, but, hey, it's... MEGA SHARK VS. GIANT OCTOPUS! What did you expect?

  2. I'm practically salivating at the mere thought of the geektastic debauchery this film is sure to deliver, LOL

  3. I look forward to you explaining how the shark is a metaphor for the Holy Spirit (No doubt what the airline passenger at the end was thinking) and that the octupus represents the Seven Deadly Sins (and a spare).

So... is this coming to a theatre near us, or is it a SciFi Original?

I'm really disappointed in the voice over guy in this trailer. How can he say "MEGA SHARK vs. GIANT OCTOPUS" in such a mundane manner?

Or am I expecting too much?

  5. This is one of the Asylum's direct to DVD releases coming out in a week or so. Usually after they sell 8 or 10 copies, the Sci-Fi Channel (or maybe they'll be SyFy by then) picks them up for broadcast. Everyone one of their movies I've seen has been incredibly awful, but, you know, hope springs eternal.

As for the voice over, maybe they were afraid that would have been one geektastic thing too many and our heads would explode.

  6. I don't even have to watch the trailer - that one frame does it for me. I am going to see that movie!

  7. I'm already buying the popcorn. Can't wait. Lamas and Gibson. 'Nuff said.

Can it be better than the one about the giant carnivorous grasshoppers which the SciFi channel had on about three weeks ago? Cause that one was more eye-opening than coffee...

Ah, but see, you're leaving out the Gibson factor. Now if it had been Tiffany Vs. Giant Grasshoppers...

  10. Seeing that giant octopus made me ink myself!

  11. Debbie Gibson deserves more respect than Tiffany. First, she performed original music. I don't know if she wrote it herself or not, but she tried songs that had not been wildly popular before. Second, she actually sold tickets.

  12. "Seeing that giant octopus made me ink myself!"

Ack, why didn't I think of that one :)

    "Second, she actually sold tickets."

I know she sold at least two. Like I said, my then girlfriend/now wife was a bonafide Gibson maniac. You can rest assured we were there when her concert came through. (Not many people can make they claim they saw Debbie Gibson & Pink Floyd in the same concert season.)

I shall be sure to stock up on Bat Shark Repellent. Is it, by chance, Penguin's exploding octopus?

  14. That would be great too! If we keep going, we're probably going to cook up a much better movie than this one is actually going to be.

  15. "That would be great too! If we keep going, we're probably going to cook up a much better movie than this one is actually going to be."You'll need to add surfers and a crazy Australian boat captain who speaks like he has marbles in his mouth.

  16. So let's see, we've got...

    80s icon Tiffany
    Giant Grasshoppers
    Exploding Octopus
    Australian Boat Captain
    Surfers

    The wheels are already turning...

  17. this Mega Shark movie is worth watching for the sole reason that Debbie Gibson stars in it

  18. coffee fan, I just watched it over the weekend and... YOU"RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! She's good in it, playing it straight instead of hamming it up. I keep forgetting she was on Broadway in Les Mis for awhile.
