DAILY CALL SHEET: APRIL 29, 2019

Masterblaster (1987) Paintball tournament turns deadly when a psycho shows up to play. Of course it's stupid, but dig that crazy 80's theme song. TIL: Along with its health benefits, Pius XII considered the purpose of sport to cultivate the dignity and harmony of the human body.

Still Voices - The Naughty Nineties (1945) "Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience." - Mark Twain

Dad Rock Daily: The Paul Butterfield Blues Band - East-West (1966) This is about as well played as white boy blues can get with a title track that pretty much creates the psychedelic jam. Laudable Lyrics: She won't believe in you, oh, if you don't treat her right.

DAILY CALL SHEET: APRIL 28, 2019

The Masque of the Red Death (1964) Classy take on the classic tale with a bit of Hop-frog thrown in for good measure. One of Corman's finest. TIL: While never converting, one of Poe's few pleasures in his last years was hanging with and taking solace from the Jesuits at Fordham.

Still Voices - The Beyond (1981) "Whoever strays from the way of good sense will abide in the assembly of the shades". - Proverbs 21:16

Dad Rock Daily: The Rezillos - Can't Stand The Rezillos (1978) Punk with a smile. Basically a goofier Ramones with the added bonus of a lady's touch. Laudable Lyrics: It's a slap in the face for the human race just to survive, to be eaten alive.

DAILY CALL SHEET: APRIL 27, 2019

Apple Pie (1976) Starts at weird and builds up speed. Don't know what it is, don't know what it's means, don't even know if I like it... but I can't stop watching. TIL: Well, Tolkien always said fantasy was a way of escaping INTO reality. Does that apply here? You tell me.

Still Voices - Cocoon (1985) "Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak." - Alan Dundes

Dad Rock Daily: The Zombies - Odessey And Oracle (1968) One of those rare albums where every single element comes together to create an indisputable masterpiece. Laudable Lyrics: You gave me faith to go on, now we're there and we've only just begun.

DAILY CALL SHEET: APRIL 26, 2019

Heartstopper (1989) Colonial-era Tory vampire putters about Pittsburgh, bemoans democracy, and befriends a priest. Dull, dull, and, oh yes, dull. TIL: JPII wrote that true democracy requires the rule of law and the correct conception of the human person. Don't get me started.

Still Voices - Jurassic Park (1993) "There are three kinds of men. The one that learns by reading. The few who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves." - Will Rogers

Dad Rock Daily: Otis Redding - Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul (1965) Need to know what 60's Soul was all about? Listen and be schooled. Laudable Lyrics: Please wash away all my fears, oh now Good God Almighty, help me.

And finally, for Aleteia this week, I give my first impressions of Avengers: Endgame. I say impressions rather than review as I am loathe to give any spoilers until everyone has seen the movie. Hurry and do so, please, so we can talk about it.

DAILY CALL SHEET: APRIL 25, 2019

The Day Time Ended (1980) Supernova sends family hurtling through space and time. Full of ideas, empty of budget. TIL: In the early 20th Century scientists began positing theories that the universe would one day end, finally catching up to the Church who knew it all along.

Still Voices - Spaceballs (1987) "Politicians and diapers must be changed often, and for the same reason." - Mark Twain

Dad Rock Daily: The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Axis: Bold As Love (1967) Oft thought the weakest of his 3 studio albums, but for guitar nuts that's like saying the Holy Spirit is the lesser of the Trinity. Laudable Lyrics: And so castles made of sand, fall in the sea, eventually.

DAILY CALL SHEET: APRIL 24, 2019

Zombie High (1987) Familiar twenty-somethings attend high school where students are having their minds wiped. You might wish yours could be too after watching. TIL: Under Catholic theory man is more than his mind, so a loss of memories and personality is not a loss of soul.

Still Voices - Wings of Desire (1987) "Angels can fly because they take themselves lightly." - G.K. Chesterton

Dad Rock Daily: Ted Nugent - Ted Nugent (1975) First post-Amboy Dukes effort from the Nuge delivers sturdy hard rock fit to slam a six-pack to. Laudable Lyrics: Sometimes you wanna get higher, and sometimes you gotta start low.

DAILY CALL SHEET: APRIL 23, 2019

The Ritual (2017) Cribs from The Descent, Blair Witch, and Wicker Man, with a deer monster thrown in for good measure. Better than it sounds. TIL: Every culture in history has had rituals because they correspond to an innate need. To abandon ritual is to abandon human nature.

Still Voices - The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) "How long, O sluggard, will you lie there? When will you rise from your sleep?" - Proverbs 6:9

Dad Rock Daily: Marianne Faithfull - Broken English (1979) Like a peek into the pain-filled diary of a world weary woman who has seen one too many bad things. Laudable Lyrics: Well, I know that you're tired of living this way. We've been trying to get high without having to pay.

And finally, I’ll have a full review later this week, but for now let's just say Avengers: Endgame is 100% for the fans who have been with these movies for twelve years, and for them, three hours will pass far too quickly.

DAILY CALL SHEET: APRIL 22, 2019

Highway to Hell (1991) After a Hellcop arrests his gal, Charlie travels the backroads of Hades to save her. Good in that late-night viewing sort of way. TIL: Some skeptics suggest Christianity only spread thanks to Roman roadways. You think maybe the message helped a little too?

Still Voices - Bird Box (2018) "No matter how much you keep encouraging someone who is blindfolded to stare through the cloth, he still won’t see a thing." - Franz Kafka

Dad Rock Daily: The Isley Brothers - 3 + 3 (1973) Mellow and soulful, but is that a touch of Hendrix-like guitar playing I hear? You just never know what mix is going to work. Laudable Lyrics: My destination's closer day by day, so I can't concern with the other side of the road.

DAILY CALL SHEET: APRIL 21, 2019

Yongary, Monster from the Deep (1967) Prehistoric monster scarfs down Korea's gasoline. Begs the question, what did it eat before the stuff was invented? TIL: The current pope seems very concerned about fossil fuels impact of God's creation. Think he would cheer for Yongary?

Still Voices - Flowers and Trees (1932) "Then let all the trees of the forest exult before the Lord, who comes, who comes to rule the earth." - 1 Chronicles 16:33

Dad Rock Daily: David Bowie - Hunky Dory (1971) Bowie pays tribute to his influences and in doing so makes his first great album. Laudable Lyrics: Free of thoughts unpure and of thoughts unkind, gentleness clears the soul, love will clean your mind and makes you free!

And finally, the Lenten fast has ended. Let the carnage begin!

DAILY CALL SHEET: APRIL 20, 2019

The Werewolf of Washington (1973) Dean Stockwell wolfs out and chews scenery in D.C. It's supposedly a satire, but of what it never really seems to make clear. TIL: Innumerable people have abandoned religion and replaced it with politics. How's that working out for everyone?

Still Voices - Futurama (TV Series 1999-2013) “You can safely assume you've created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do.” - Anne Lamott

Dad Rock Daily: INXS - Shabooh Shoobah (1982) The pretty poster-boys of Australian pop rock could actually produce some good tracks. Many of them are here. Laudable Lyrics: Have you noticed to this day how many times you've prayed and played.

Friday, April 19, 2019

DAILY CALL SHEET: APRIL 19, 2019

Strangler of the Swamp (1946) Spirit punishes the families of those who wrongly hanged him. Well made and atmospheric. Oh, and foggy. TIL: Interesting that the story of Jesus' wrongful death and return doesn't end in revenge. Guess he'd never make it as a writer in Hollywood.

Still Voices - Hannibal (2001) "I believe in an open mind, but not so open that your brains fall out." - Arthur Hays Sulzberger

Dad Rock Daily: Rainbow - Rising (1976) Classic guitar rock shows it's Blackmore's band, but Dio's voice definitely vies for center stage this time around. Laudable Lyrics: Something's calling me back. There's a light in the black. Am I ready to go?

DAILY CALL SHEET: APRIL 18, 2019

Wholly Moses (1980) Woefully unfunny Talmudic take on Life of Brian. Pretty sure the 11th Commandment would have been thou shalt not make this movie. TIL: Jews, Catholics, & Protestants may enumerate the Decalogue differently, but the same rules are there no mater the version.

Still Voices - Halloween (1978) "The wicked spies on the righteous and seeks to kill him." - Psalms 37:32

Dad Rock Daily: Genesis - Selling England By The Pound (1973) Considered one of the Top 10 Prog-Rock records of all time, and I won't argue. Jaw dropping if all you know are the group's 80's hits. Laudable Lyrics: I know what I like, and I like what I know.

And finally, CNA’s Tim Hruszkewycz has seen the latest horror film to come down the pike, The Curse of La Llorona, and has a few observations on Catholicism in Hollywood.

DAILY CALL SHEET: APRIL 17, 2019

Beyond the Door (1974) Exorcist/Rosemary's baby knock-off replaces quality with nose flutes, soup obsession, and overall general weirdness. TIL: Though not admitting to any spiritual reality, a growing number of psychologists are acknowledging the psychiatric value of exorcisms.

Still Voices - Spy Kids (2001) "In the absence of any other proof, the thumb alone would convince me of God's existence." - Isaac Newton

Dad Rock Daily: Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home (1965) Dylan plugs in and the purists whine even more than he does. Good stuff. Laudable Lyrics: The hollow horn plays wasted words, proves to warn that he not busy being born is busy dying.

Tuesday, April 16, 2019

DAILY CALL SHEET: APRIL 16, 2019

Womaneater (1958) Scientist feeds ladies to a vaguely plant-like thing which then produces life-restoring fluids. 1-to-1 ratio seems kind of self defeating. TIL: Good ends do not justify evil acts. Yes, God can bring good out of evil, but last time I checked, we're not God.

Still Voices - Heavenly Daze (1948) "It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels." - Saint Augustine

Dad Rock Daily: Accept - Restless and Wild (1982) Classic early 80's German speed metal. With song titles like Shake Your Heads, you know what you're getting. Laudable Lyrics: If love was money I would always pay the price, while a million dollars will never ever change my life.
