YOU WIN SOME…

headfamily

That handsome fellow up there is a picture of me earlier this morning after I finally got around to listening to last Friday’s Catholic Answers Live featuring an interview with Jeff Miller, The Curt Jester. The ever gracious Mr. Miller was very complimentary about my efforts here and I just wanted to thank him publicly for his kind words. I have to admit, it went to my head a little bit…

…until later this afternoon when I read Stefan McDaniel’s featured article at First Things which seems to suggest that we bloggers represent the end of all intelligent discourse on the planet, completing the mental death spiral begun by television decades ago. Okay, so it’s actually an essay applying Neil Postman’s theory of the Typographic Mind to the blogosphere and has some interesting points worth arguing about, but golly gee whillikers Mr. McDaniel, way to deflate a guy.

I think that just about everyone goes through a anti-blogging/anti-internet discourse phase. I myself declared myself done with forums. Apparently, some wisdom enough came from somewhere so I made it a general intention and not a vow. So now I occasionally chime in on a forum.

I think Red Cardigan found an apt quote from Mason Cooley, that I think applies to blogging: "Writing about an idea frees me of it. Thinking about it is a circle of repetitions."

Wow that's some grammar eh? I myself keep telling myself that I myself needs me to proofread before submitting. :)

A feast for the senses, this blog!
It's better than borsht, mead, or grog!
Our traditiation
is nigh saturation
with movies that leave us agog.

So how can they say it's unwise
To sample this page with our eyes?
Our minds become keen
From what we have seen;
our thoughts, whither good incense flies.

If only I was as eloquent as Smiter, I could wax poetic and agree. As it is, I can only agree. This blog makes me think and it makes me laugh. Often, I need the laughter more than I need to think.

Don't be too deflated, Eegah.

And, nice visuals.

And on an unrelated note, the Lactophage was baptized on Sun., for which we announce with great joy, "One of us! One of us!"

And obviously, THIS blog isn't part of the mental death spiral, because we can say things like that and expect a few people will get the reference. My reaction to that article was that the author needed to take a little break and go play with his Bruce Campbell action figure....

On that note, a good friend of mine went to see Bruce Campbell at some function I can't recall. He was asked about a remake of Evil Dead. Naturally, the audience cheered for him to be in it, but Bruce replied that he was 51 years old now and didn't we learn anything from the last Indiana Jones movie? :)

Sorry, rough work week, so I'm just checking in. So let's see...

Arkanabar, I haven't done The Queen of Outer Space... yet.

Jervaise, I'm pretty sure you meant to post this over on The Lightning Bug's Lair, but what the heck, we've got no problem with Heather O`Rourke around here either.

Smiter, we should get you to do some haiku movie reviews. I hear that Queen Of Outer Space has yet to be done.

PaperSmyth, the Beetlejuice pic was probably obvious, the other was from an old Full Moon flick called Head Of The Family. Can't really recommend it because of too much gratuitous silicon, but the makeup was good.

Scott & Xena, I have to agree the guy needs to chill out a bit. The impression the article left on me was that once you start reading blogs your mind will alter in such a way that you'll never pick up a book again. Riiiight. I also notice he didn't give the names of any of the "good blogs" he and his friends (i.e. all the really smart people) force themselves to read. It would have been nice to know what I should be aspiring to.

I learned long ago that even my own regularly exercised sense of irony has trouble whenever it runs into an anti-'blogging 'blot post.

(By the way, for word verification, I have to type PYROURAT! Am I the only one who thinks that sounds like a cool B-movie title?)

I would lay odds that since Mr.McDaniel was writing for First Things, which is still being published as a magazine (Borders quit carrying it in my area, what's up with that?), he would likely refer to himself as a columnist, not a blogger :)
