INTERMISSION: YOU BIG DUMMY

sanford

Yes, this is yet another post full of excuses for not blogging regularly, but at least I’ve got a doctor’s note this time. I was having some bad symptoms which required an impromptu visit to the cardiologist this week to get poked, prodded, and run through the wringer. Or treadmill, if you want to be literal about it.

Now, not to worry, it’s not THE BIG ONE or anything like that. In fact, my heart actually tested above average for my age, something I could have told the doctors BEFORE they started inserting the needles if they had bothered to ask. (After all, in Whoville they say that when I came home to the Church my small Grinchy heart grew THREE sizes that day!) Unfortunately, I do seem to have developed a case of severe reflux coupled with borderline acute exhaustion. So, I’ve been busy these last few days trying not to be busy. And trying to figure out how to live without caffeine. Guess which one’s been harder?

Anyway, the blog will continue (can’t disappoint my tens of fans), but it will probably still be in fits and starts for the next two or three weeks while I settle into my new routine. And my new (sob) diet. You know, for a guy who harps on the Catechism all the time, I don’t see how I missed the paragraph which states, “Life and physical health are precious gifts entrusted to us by God. We must take reasonable care of them.” What a big dummy.

It will be okay. I keep you and your family in prayers every day.

Caffeine is ridiculously hard to live without. I've been trying to cut it out completely myself. During certain weeks, I can average about 4 cans of Mountain Dew a day. That's because I have two kids diagnosed with ADHD that I try to keep up with. Hey, I know. Think I can quit, too? Effective now, Mug Root Beer only, as suggested to me by Xena.

Just as long as you don't have any plans to go off and join 'Lizabeth in the Great Beyond, OK? Rest up. Eat right. Feel better.

Ah, life without "zombie juice." Three separate times in the last ten years I've divested myself entirely of caffeine. It always comes back, just like the evil undead. Someday soon, I know, I shall have to make it four, and I'm dreading it like a great lent. And so:

Eegah must live without caff.
Well, should he cry or just laugh?
It seems way too hard,
but if he tried lard
there's biscuits and pie-and-a-half.

(And them's good eatin'!)

I hear you. The DASH diet sucks like a bucket of ticks. But even though solid and liquid chocolate contain caffeine, cocoa powder doesn't. I go off caffeine and this is what happens:

Thanks, everyone.

Mug is great, although I lean towards IBC myself. Their cream soda is great too.

Not too worry about the Big One. After all the tests the doctor said I don't have to worry about that kind of thing any time over the next decade. Of course, in an amazing display of questionable bedside manner, he reminded me I could just as easily drop dead from something else the moment I left his office.

Mmmmm, lard.

MELTING NAZIS! Ah, the golden age of PG rated movies.

I would suggest Faygo: redpop, rootbeer, frosh, chocolate cream, etc. But I don't know if you can find it in your neck of the woods.

I went cold turkey three weekends ago. It was horrible but necessary. Now I'm back to one cup of coffee or so a day.

Alas, no Faygo around here that I've been able to find. Heck, back when I was little, it was rare to even see a Pepsi in stores. It was all Coke and RC down here in the South.

Yer in the wrong part of the South, my friend. I'm able to get Faygo in my neck of the woods /|;^) Just be aware that they do caffeinate their cola.

Another option, should you be so lucky, is Vernor's Ginger Ale. Nearly all ginger ale is caffeine free, but Vernor's is the best.

Okay, I have to share this post with you, because it contains the line, "the horror movie of bread." Check out Ask Sister Mary Martha.

Well, I live right outside Atlanta, so it's all Coke and Iced Tea around here. I'll keep looking.

Loved the Sister Mary Martha post. It's the best bread horror story since Night of The Living Bread. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0133313/

"Can’t disappoint my tens of fans". I'm still laughing. Can't some of us count more than once, if we check your blog every few hours hoping for a new post? Here in Houston I've also had to give up coffee. You'd think a morning habit of a half-cup of decaf loaded with hot water wouldn't be a hard habit to break, but no... I am reminded of a good friend, Russian Orthodox, who decided to give up coffee for Lent. After going into the DT's, she called her Bishop, who told her in no uncertain terms that vowing to give up 22 cups of coffee a day cold turkey was NOT a good idea. She was instructed to modify her Lenten mortification by reducing her ingestion level slowly. So it could be worse.

Yeah, it was rough. I was up to a six (okay, eight) pack of Diet Coke a day minimum. But after watching my father go cold turkey after 30 years of alcoholism, I figured I could kick the caffeine habit a little easier. 22 cups, though, might have required a little weening.
