NOW YOU SEE HIM NOW YOU DON’T

Now You See Him Now You Don't

So, what’s my excuse this time?

I mean, two weeks ago I promised that June would be Atheists Questions of Doom month here at The B-Movie Catechism, and then nothing, I just up and disappear. What’s the deal?

Well, without going into too much detail, we’ve been having a rough time lately with our Aspergers child. Some of you with special needs kids out there know how it is. You go from a pretty good winter (six amazing weeks in a row where the whole family got to sit through an entire mass together) to a crash and burn spring (your son is excused from attending school indefinitely until you find a way to stop him from exploding into violent fits of rage). So most days this past month have been spent dealing with teachers, doctors, and therapists, while most nights have been taken up with finishing the work I couldn’t get to during the day. It happens. You say your prayers and deal with it.

But now I think I can get back to blogging. And with all the heavy happenings that have been going on in real life, you can bet I haven’t been spending my evenings watching There Will Be Blood or some similar soul crushing experience. Oh no. My nights have been filled with the most ridiculous cinematic train wrecks ever committed to celluloid. And I’m going to share them with you all real soon. Stay tuned.

Thanks, friends. Not trying to sound like a martyr or anything, just letting everyone know why there's been no posting.

We're praying too. I had to look up meds for Asperger's, since I didn't think there were any. Turns out, they're usually prescribed for the side effects of HAVING Asperger's; depression, anxiety, anger management, etc. If nothing else, you have made me realize how God has given us the great gift of a son with Asperger's who was so high functioning that he was 20 before he was diagnosed. We love him dearly, he's hilarious, and a joy to do projects with that rely on non-verbal communication, like building stuff. He's a born engineer. You make my life with 6 kids, a lot with special needs, and being unemployed, seem calm and relaxed. And I DO get to watch bad movies at night. We'll continue to pray for your family! And remember, watching bad movies is like going to Adoration; you get away from the cares of today to contemplate the sublime. Well, OK, bad movies aren't sublime, but they do make you laugh.

Thanks so much, Rocket. And again, I don't want to over dramatize things. The majority of the time my son is a charmer (the horse therapy people already want to adopt him after only two sessions) and he's very high functioning (nine years old and already modding his video games), but on those occasions when something sensory or emotional sets him off, well, it can be frighteneing to people who aren't used to it. As for the meds, they usually prescribe two kinds for Aspergers, Ritalin type drugs (which we've forbidden) or anti-psychotices. We've only allowed the anit-psychs to see if they would help in social situations, but unfortunately each one only seems to be beneficial for a short period and then it's back to square one. Along with prayer, we've got our hopes placed more in therapies and plain old getting older. We'll see. Either way we wouldn't trade him for anything. It's a cliche with special needs parents, I know, but mostly it feels like an honor to have been granted care of my son instead of a burden. But you already know that, don't you?

Well, you and the whole family never "fell off" my prayer list, but it is good to be reminded to pray for you. And mine don't have his particular condition, but the meds which have been prescribed have been close. One of ours took himself off meds at about 13 and now, after some bumps, is doing well without them, so there is certainly hope.

Just keep your priorities as they are. That's one reason I feel good about coming back here: authenticity of how you practice the faith you preach. I'll be here a good long while because of that.

Everybody's too kind. And be assured, my prayers are going out to each of you as well.

(and it puts a new spin on "Please prove you're not a robot".)

Would robots appreciate bad movies about themselves?

Oh, you'll regret that link as it just gave me an idea for a series of posts. If only I didn't have to finish up the atheists things I promised first.
