I was thinking of a book from the 1800's called "oddities and curiosities of medicine" or something like that, but that's not science fiction.

Nope, that wasn't it, but I couldn't just let that title go by without looking for it. I found this, Anomalies and Curiosities of Medicine by George M. Gould and Walter L. Pyle, to read for free at Gutenberg. http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/747

All that comes to mind is a friend's description of A Canticle of Liebowitz . . .

Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner! For the first part anyway. In A Canticle for Liebowitz, an Abbott meets a character who is growing a second head due to atomic fallout and briefly wonders about the spiritual implications, which got me to thinking about what exactly the Vatican would do about such situations. They seem to like committees, so...

"A Canticle for Liebowitz" is such a classic I doubt any of your regulars didn't catch it. I'm thinking that if the Vatican found a guy with two faces/heads, they'd pray earnestly for God to give them priestly vocations, so one priest could hear 2 Confessions at the same time! There are still a few old-fashioned confessionals around (like the ones Padre Pio is shown in) and that would be just the thing for Fr. Janus & Fr. Geminus.

Anomalies and Curiosities of medicine was indeed the book I was thinking of. Specifically the case of Edward Mordake. Wikipedia quotes the book:

Where I now learn a movie about him is being released this October!

"...they'd pray earnestly for God to give them priestly vocations, so one priest could hear 2 Confessions at the same time!"

That's great! I'm going to have to wait a year and then steal that for a cartoon.

"... I now learn a movie about him is being released this October!"

With that whole "it whispered to him at night" thing, that might actually be a creepy little movie.

"A Canticle for Leibowitz"

Yep, I guess that was a pretty easy one for anybody who has read the classics.
