SOMEBODY PUSHES ME, I PUSH BACK

mastercontrol

Well, looks like I tasked yet another laptop a bit too hard and ended up with a crash that destroyed my boot sectors. The only fix the obstinate thing would accept was restoring the system back to factory default status, which meant losing everything on the C: drive, including three or four almost finished blog posts (I use Live Writer). After spending the last two days reinstalling three years worth of programs and updates, I’m ready to get back to work, but please bear with me as it will take a bit of time to retype all those nuggets of wisdom I stole from other smarter people. Sigh. The worst year of this blog continues.

Wow! Lightening strikes, computer crashes, dietary restrictions, etc... Yeah, you have been having the Year of Doom, haven't you?

I shall say an entire rosary just for your family today and continue to pray that things go better. Bless.

Maybe your laptop achieved sentience just long enough to see the upcoming b-movie musical tour, and "was so distraught by a bad night's wrestling he went down to the garage and cut his own head off."

Or maybe I'm projecting. Still haven't recovered from that clip of "The Apple" yet.

I can't speak for everyone else, but the spiritual warfare I see around these parts is mostly a war of attrition. Oh well, thems the breaks.

No doubt. I had two of them almost ready to go. Well, too bad computer, I still know where the clips are. Bwah Ha Ha! Unfortunately, I was also a couple of paragraphs away from finishing up the nearly-forgotten review of Demon Knight. I'll get there one day.

I keep nearly all my personal files on a separate disk, but that's much easier to achieve with a desktop than a laptop.

But if your lappy can be part of a home network, and you're not afraid to learn new things, set up one of your computers with a linux system, and use grsync for archiving.

It's pretty inexpensive these days to get a backup drive and backup software. We have 6 home computers, six kids, and (at least before last Friday) two working parents. Lots of B-movies on the spare drive too. That's a lot of backups, but it runs automatically and saved our hides when we had a lightening strike. Now if it can just produce a new aerospace job for me (layoffs at NASA - sigh) it woud be perfect.

Well, I actually have three external hard drives, but... I seem to have filled them up with everything but backups of my C: drive. Guess it's time to buy a fourth, huh?
