COMING ATTRACTIONS: SPELLCASTER

spell2

Coming up next, as requested by Scott W. over at Romish Internet Graffiti, is Spellcaster, a low, low budget treat from that long ago age known as 1992 featuring everybody’s favorite New Wave poster boy, Adam Ant. Alas, this is one of those direct-to-video goodies which has yet to see release on DVD. That means no trailer, no movie poster, no nothing except a picture of the video box I nabbed off someone’s listing on e-bay. Still, I hate to send you away empty handed. Until I can come up with some suitable stills or video clips from the movie itself, here’s Adam working at his at job with The Ants bemoaning deep meaning philosophies and cajoling you to throw your safety overboard and join his insect nation.

Oh, you spent money on it? I didn't intend that. And does direct to video take it even lower than B-movie? :)

Don't worry, no money was spent. There are a large number of movies that were released on VHS or shown only on TV which will likely never see the light of day on DVD due to rights issues. Because of that, there's a large community on the Net who pass around blurry, but watchable, digital rips of their old VHS collections. You just have to be patient and eventually what you're looking for comes around.

Occasionally a studio will surprise you and you have to make sure you do the honorable thing and rent or buy the DVD release. This happened to me just a few months back when, out of nowhere, The Fabulous Stains popped up on DVD after twenty years of existing only on bootleg tapes recorded off the old Night Flight show.

It was like seeing a bad imitaion of Tim Curry's Dr. Frankenfurter try to do "Pirates of the Carribean". Just appalling....

On Sunday, I'm taking a break from my Lenten fiction fast to watch some better pirate movie, just to clear my head.

I went on a mini-pirate kick myself a few weeks back and watched some of the Depp movies again along with some of the old classics like Treasure Island. I'm afraid Mr. Ant's effort here is kind of lacking. I haven't done a pirate movie yet. After the request-a-thon I may have to dig one up.

I actually enjoyed the song and the video; every so often it's appropriate for entertainers to give us almost mindless fluff for our enjoyment. Not everything has to be deeply philosophical or socially conscious.

Sorry, I had just finished watching Spellcaster and had yet to forgive Mr. Ant for THAT performance. In truth, back in the day, I blasted Goody Two Shoes as much as the next person.
